This spectacular iridescent-flowered species with glossy green leaves that appear dark purplish on the lower side has long been a taxon of confusion.

Allied to the rugosa complex (A. chiquitensis, A. rugosa, A. arcuata) there seems to be extremely broad variability within the presumable distribution range of its relatives (e.g. A. brunneomaculata). The specimen depicted here, however, shows the sensu stricto morph of this species.
