Aristolochia nevesarmondiana is a very remarkable Brazilian species as it is capable of climbing but at the same time producing horizontal non-climbing shoots. It may be an evolutionary ancestor in terms of its habit or the survivor of a primitive lineage.
Although the flowers are quite tiny they will appear in clusters out of these side shoots and provide a curious sight!
