Aristolochia macroura constitutes the southern equivalent to the widespread A. trilobata with which it is often confused.

A quite distinctive feature beside the ones mentioned here is easy to recognize for everybody even without eyesight: While A. trilobata emits quite a strange, undescribable smell if you come close it is absolutely no problem distinguishing it from the strong faecal odour of an open A. macroura flower which is recognizable from a dozen metres away on a hot summerday!
